Drumbeat Marked the Start The Ceremony commenced at 2 pm and began with the drum performance by the St. Paul’s College Chinese Drum Band. St. Paul’s College and Chung Chi College have shared a longstanding bond ever since both institutions used Bishop’s House in Central as their classrooms in their early years, and Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui, to which St. Paul’s College belongs, continues to support the educational mission of Chung Chi. The drumbeats played by the vigorous students from St. Paul’s College echoed the shared history and solidarity between the two institutions, and created an energetic atmosphere for the Carnival. Eight distinguished guests officiated at the Ceremony, including Mr. Tang Ping Keung, Secretary for Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China; Mr. Sun Yuk Han Chris, Secretary for Labour and Welfare of the HKSAR; Professor Chai Yat Chiu John, Chairman of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Council; Dr. Chan Tak Lam Norman, Vice-Chairman of the CUHK Council and Chairman of the Chung Chi College (CCC) Board of Trustees; Professor Lo Yuk Ming Dennis, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK; Professor Ko Wing Hung, Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students of CUHK, and Chairman of the CCC 75th Anniversary Celebration Organising Committee; Professor Kwan Mei Po, Head of CCC; and Mr. Ngai King Kwok Anthony, Chairman of CCC Alumni Association and of the Carnival Committee of the CCC 75th Anniversary Celebration Organising Committee. Joyful Journey”, is designed to encourage all teachers, students and alumni to explore Chung Chi. In addition to the Carnival, a series of celebratory events will soon be held, including thematic talks, talent contests, sports competitions, a cruise tour, and an anniversary gala, all of which welcome all Chung Chi-ers to join. Professor Kwan expressed her gratitude for the support of Professor Chai and Professor Lo, the devotion of Mr. Tang and Mr. Sun to Chung Chi, and the dedication of Professor Ko, Mr. Ngai and the various organising committees for the activities. She also appreciated the St. Paul’s College Chinese Drum Band, and all the departments, students, staff, alumni and service teams who participated in the Carnival, which vividly demonstrated the genuine spirit of the Chung Chi Family. Chung Chi Family with CUHK’s Unity Professor Chai, who had participated in his second Chung Chi Carnival, remarked that revisiting Chung Chi has moved him as there were more stalls set up by different departments and units, reflecting the unity of CUHK’s members. Professor Lo noted that Chung Chi has been the place of many of his “firsts”. He recalled that he was affiliated to Chung Chi when first joined CUHK, and that his first student activity as the designated ViceChancellor and President was to serve as the speaker at Chung Chi’s assembly. The two Secretaries were Chung Chi alumni. Mr. Tang graduated from the Department of Social Work in 1987, while Mr. Sun graduated from the Faculty of Business Administration in 1994. Mr. Tang shared that every visit to Chung Chi feels like returning home, bringing back his memories on campus. Mr. Sun recalled how the former College Head, Dr. Philip Shen, inspired him in pursuit of knowledge and of love, leaving a profound impact on his life. After sharing, the officiating guests beat drums in unison with the Chinese Drum Band. Following the drumbeats rose, the whole stadium chanted together, “Chung Chi College, a family so dear, in CUHK’s embrace, we hold it near”, symbolising that the generations of Chung Chiers and CUHKers will support the College’s education, research, and students’ all-round development. 2,000 People Created Anthem Singing Record The College then conducted a session to create an anthem singing record. Besides the over 2,000 attendees on-site, Chung Chi alumni who lived overseas also participated online. The collective singing marked a historical record as the largest group performance of the song. To commemorate this record, renowned artist Dr. Kan Kit Keung and his elder brother, distinguished Hong Kong designer Professor Kan Tai Keung, were invited to design the 75th anniversary limited edition celebration T-shirt. The T-shirt that bore Dr. Kan’s handwritten calligraphy of the College anthem became the remembrance for those who participated in the record creation. The College later held a tug-of-war match, which is a traditional event in the College’s “Fu Cup” competition.

However, Tobby Yeung, a second-year student from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, sees it differently. A two-time award winner of the Au Kin Kung Memorial Calligraphy Competition, she often expresses her feelings through calligraphy, and her works often include lyrics from ballads. She believes that the vitality of calligraphy does not lie merely in pure technique but also in the artist’s state of mind, which becomes a part of the piece. Q: When did you first get in touch with Chinese art? Could you share your learning process? My first exposure to Chinese art came in third grade. At that time, I spotted a quaint shop in Kennedy Town, which was Mr. Cheung Sing Hung (Yo Shing)’s workshop. I was captivated by the beauty of the artworks displayed inside and wanted to learn. Yo Shing was a sculptor specialising in inscribing calligraphy with wood engraving. So, I first learned character carving. Since the content carved was calligraphy, my aesthetic focus shifted to the forms of characters. Student Reporter Cheuk Wing Ki Isabelle
Besides calligraphy, Tobby also studied Chinese seal engraving, painting and poem writing. Some of her works are listed above: Copying Zhao Mengfu’s writing of Ode to the Goddess of River Luo (upper left), Seal of Solitude (bottom left) and Self-written Qilu (right). often amazed by the beauty of others’ handwriting, which led me to study calligraphy. As I was still young then, Yo Shing primarily guided me by fostering interest. Starting in Secondary One, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors, I practiced calligraphy occasionally in my spare time for several years. It wasn’t until Secondary Four that I began systematic calligraphy training. That year, I was under great academic pressure and hoped that calligraphy could provide some relief. By chance, I discovered the work of a calligrapher and seal carving artist Mr. Tso Cheuk Yim online. His works surprised me – Chinese calligraphy doesn’t have to be confined to classical poetry after all? Mr. Tso’s works are playful and witty. For example, he carves seals with cartoon-themed content and writes pop song lyrics in calligraphy. That’s why I’ve continued learning from him to this day. Mr. Tso is currently a part-time lecturer in the CUHK Department of Fine Arts. His teaching style follows a traditional approach, requiring me to copy ancient calligraphy copybooks to build a solid foundation. Q: What draws you to Chinese calligraphy? What does it mean to you? My love for calligraphy is quite intuitive. When I first started learning calligraphy, Mr. Tso asked me to choose an ancient copybook to practice. I was instantly drawn to Chu Suiliang’s regular script piece Eulogy on the Chronicle of Ni Kuan, which radiated an elegant, gentle and classical charm. Since then, I’ve mainly imitated his style and copied The Emperor’s Preface to the Sacred Teachings. Later, Mr. Tso selected Zhiyong’s Thousand-Character Essay in Standard and Cursive and Zhao Mengfu’s semi-cursive Ode to the Goddess of the Luo River for me to copy. At first, I wasn’t used to them, but after writing more, I found that they suited my own handwriting style, and I grew to love them. I’m an introverted person and tend to get nervous when conversing with others. Calligraphy then serves as a substitute, as if saying, “If I can’t speak well, I’ll write it down.” It’s fascinating when others can sense my emotions through my works. Some may approach calligraphy in a pedantic way, fixating on character forms and the ink marks. But I believe calligraphy loses its vitality when detached from content. So, when I write, I choose the content according to my mood. Also, because I enjoy listening to music, I often use lyrics of pop songs. Q: Could you share your experience of participating in calligraphy competitions? What have you gained? My first competition experience dates to Secondary Four, when I took part in a competition with a piece based on a Ci by Li Qingzhao. Later, on Mr. Tso’s recommendation, I also participated in the “Xiling Cup Calligraphy, Painting and Seal-carving Creation Competition” organised by the Hong Kong Xiling School. In addition, I took part in the Au Kin Kung Memorial Calligraphy Competition organised by Chung Chi College. Mr. Tso was among the prizewinners of the inaugural competition, and it was also he who encouraged me to join. I was fortunate enough to receive awards in both the fifth and this year’s (sixth) competitions. The calligraphy work Shade was inspired by the song by Mr. Terence Lam, a Hong Kong singer. As my experience grew, I discovered that copying classical calligraphy for practice and creating works for competitions are entirely different experiences. In daily practice, I just write casually. In contrast, when creating works for competitions, I need to master the style I’m imitating and weave it into classical or even popular phrases. Moreover, I must finish the work before the deadline, which is a great practice. Competitions also provide opportunities to learn from peers. In the recent exhibition of awardees and judges of the Au Kin Kung Memorial Calligraphy Competition, I saw the work of another CC student. The self-designed mounting resembled the pages of an ancient volume and looked remarkably elegant. I asked him about the production method. Q: Could you introduce a work of yours in the exhibition of the Au Kin Kung Memorial Calligraphy Competition? What’s the background of its creation? My work Shade, which features a song by local singer Terence Lam. Having worn glasses since I was young and being rather poor with words, I tend to gently touch my round black frames whenever I do not know what to say, as if giving my silence a buffer. Therefore, I really resonate with the lyrics “It’s not just a style, pretending to be calm, hiding the expressions that do not fit in this world”. The line “The glasses are tinted because I’m hypersensitive to the world, not wanting to see too clearly” also has a similar meaning – life rarely goes our way. When we confront a harsh reality, the truth can be unbearable. Silent blurring and detachment, a “weak denial”, may be the only way for living. To echo the message of the song and add a bit of playfulness, I specially arranged the entire lyrics in the shape of a pair of glasses. Interestingly, during the mounting process, some of the ink blurred. I felt ashamed at first, but then I thought it just echoed the lyrics, “not wanting to see too clearly”. I chose to see it as a stroke of fate instead of damage, and so I decided the piece was still fit to be shown. Student Reporter Leung Nga Wing
凌道揚博士:〈凌院長開學典禮訓詞〉,《崇基校刊》,第十二期(一九五七年九月二十日) Sense of Renovation Chung Chi’s motto is “In Pursuit of Excellence”. So, what is “excellence”? In short, it refers to progress from continual renovation to constant perfection. To reach it, we must focus on the sense of renovation, which represents a state of never becoming outdated or regressive. Once we deeply engage in academics with perseverance, we will be worthy of being Chung Chi students. The Project E MiC Visual Mock-up Served as a Postgraduate Teaching Demonstration Chung Chi College Project E adopted Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) to build a new student hostel. A 1:1 full-scale building mock-up has been erected at Ho Lawn, adjacent to Chung Chi Piazza. The mock-up reproduces the MiC module’s structural connections, the pre-integrated MEP systems, and the interior layout. It serves as a visualization and simulation platform before construction. On January 23, the MiC Visual Mock-up served as a teaching demonstration for a postgraduate program of the School of Architecture at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Since MiC is a core topic in the curriculum, representatives from CUHK’s Campus Development Office and architects from Ronald Lu & Partners, the architectural consultant for Project E, were invited to explain key MiC principles to around 80 postgraduate students using Project E as a case. After the lecture, students visited the 1:1 full-scale mock-up on site, gaining first hand insights into sustainable, high performance building systems, coordination workflows, and quality control processes. Project E’s innovative construction method not only enhances the living and activity spaces at Chung Chi College but also makes the MiC module a dynamic platform bridging academic learning and realworld practice. This initiative enables future architectural professionals to learn directly from a real project, underscoring the College’s commitment to construction innovation and sustainable development. The Project E architects introduced the architectural design concepts of the project to the postgraduate students at the School of Architecture and explained the key features of the MiC approach. The postgraduate students visited the 1:1 full scale MiC mock-up on site.
