封面故事 COVER STORY 2 3 崇基學院七十五週年校慶 至善講座系列：健康新知 Chung Chi College 75th Anniversary Excellence Talk Series: Health Insights 為慶祝七十五週年校慶，展現普及知識與推 廣身心靈健康的全人教育願景，崇基學院籌 辦「至善講座系列」，廣邀不同界別的傑出 學者分享經驗新知，探討關鍵議題。系列 共分四個主題，二月七日揭幕講座主題為 「健康新知」，並有幸邀得兩位國際知名學 者—中大校長盧煜明教授及善衡書院院長 莫仲棠教授主講。 創建抗癌新防線 講座分兩部分，上午場次由中大校長、中大 李嘉誠醫學講座教授兼中大化學病理學講座 教授盧煜明教授主講。盧校長以「創建抗癌 新防線」為題，深入闡述其在癌症早期檢測 與診斷領域的開創性研究成果，及其如何為 防治癌症開闢全新防線。講座開始前，盧校 長聯同崇基學院院長關美寶教授、崇基學院 七十五週年校慶籌備委員會主席高永雄教 授，及崇基學院七十五週年校慶至善講座系 列委員會主席陳早標先生進行剪綵，為講座 系列揭開序幕。 盧校長在講座分享他的科研歷程，包括如何 以多年時間證實胎兒DNA會流入懷孕母親 血液的假設，發明已獲全球廣泛應用的無創 產前診斷技術，以及怎樣通過對鼻咽癌的研 究，進一步將液體活檢技術應用於癌症檢 測。他亦慷慨分享其創業經驗，通過開設科 研公司，將專利科研成果轉化成臨床技術。 盧校長在問答環節解答不少聽眾的提問，涵 蓋液體活檢技術的發展趨勢與潛力、人工智 能的科研應用，以及本地科研人才的培養。 他特別提到中大醫學院設立的「環球醫學領 To celebrate the 75th anniversary and showcase the vision of holistic education through disseminating knowledge and promoting physical, mental, and spiritual health, Chung Chi College (CCC) organised the “Excellence Talk Series,” inviting outstanding scholars from various fields to share their experiences and insights on key issues. The series consists of four themes, with the opening lecture on 7 February themed “Health Insights,” featuring two internationally renowned scholars: Professor Lo Yuk Ming Dennis, CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President and Professor Mok Chung Tong Vincent, Master of S.H. Ho College, as keynote speakers. Building New Defenses Against Cancer There are two sessions in the lecture. The morning session was delivered by CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Lo Yuk Ming Dennis, who is also Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine and Professor of Chemical Pathology at CUHK. Professor Lo delivered the talk “Building New Defenses Against Cancer,” presenting his groundbreaking research achievements in early cancer detection and diagnosis, which have opened an entirely new frontier for prevention and treatment of the disease. Before starting the lecture, Professor Lo, together with Professor Kwan Mei Po, Head of CCC, Professor Ko Wing Hung, Chair of the CCC 75th Anniversary Celebration Organising Committee, and Mr. Chan Cho Biu Eric, Chair of the CCC 75th Anniversary Excellence Talk Series Committee, performed a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially launch the talk series. Professor Lo spoke about his research journey, including how he spent years verifying the hypothesis that fetal DNA would flow into pregnant mother’s bloodstream, and invented non-invasive prenatal testing which is widely used globally. He also shared his research experience on nasopharyngeal cancer and the application of liquid biopsy for cancer screening. He then generously delivered his entrepreneurial experiences, including establishing research companies to transform patented research outcomes for clinical use. During the Q&A session, Professor Lo answered audience questions, covering trends and potential in liquid biopsy development, applications of artificial intelligence
4 5 袖培訓專修組別」，指中大重視培訓既懂醫 學需求，亦懂尖端科研的「醫生科學家」。 預防認知障礙症 下午場次則由善衡書院院長、中大內科及藥 物治療學系腦神經科莫慶堯醫學教授兼高錕 中大「腦智同護」服務之服務總監莫仲棠教 授主講。莫教授以「預防認知障礙症」為題， 分享認知障礙症的最新科研進展，以及有效 的預防策略，鼓勵聽眾及早維護腦健康與認 知功能。 莫教授從美國著名的「修女研究」出發，指 出腦小血管疾病與認知障礙的關聯，以及他 如何受該研究啟發，著力於研究預防認知障 礙症，並參與訂定腦小血管疾病研究的神經 影像標準。他亦闡述十四個認知障礙症的可 改變風險因素，說明人們能通過健康管理預 防該病症。 莫教授還提到中大「腦智同護」計劃的源起， 講述他如何應中大前校長高錕教授太太高黃 美芸女士之請，利用退役停泊在崇基的原「賽 馬會高錕腦伴同行」流動車推動腦部健康服 務。由於林青霞博士慷慨資助，莫教授團隊 得以經流動車向合資格長者進行眼底相檢 測，快速評估其認知障礙風險，並提供建議 和跟進，從而推遲患者發病時間甚至減少 患者。 體現全人教育 促進開放交流 「至善講座系列」為慶祝崇基七十五週年校 慶的重點活動之一，為隆重其事，學院悉心 設計不同環節，以提升講者與聽眾的體驗， 同時展現崇基恪守「全人教育」，兼重科技 創新與人文關懷的理念。學院將講座場地利 希慎音樂廳舞台布置成家居客廳，將「崇基 大家庭」的寓意形象化，並傳達學院樂於廣 結友好、開放交流的信息；而贈送予講者的 紀念品亦精選了七十五週年紀念「止於至 善」中國扇，上有已故國學大師饒宗頤教授 所贈墨寶，體現崇基與中大的人文傳承。 另外，為配合講座系列揭幕，學院特意於講 座當日公布全新 Podcast 訪談頻道「至善學 堂」，由崇基學院副院長、中大中國語言及 文學系黃念欣教授擔任主持，通過約二十分 鐘的訪談，讓不同年代、各有專長的崇基人 分享經驗與新知。首集節目更請來崇基校董 會副主席、資深報人陳早標先生，由他剖析 in research, and nurturing local research talent. He highlighted the “Global Physician-Leadership Stream” established by CUHK Faculty of Medicine, emphasizing the University focus on training “physician-scientists” who understand both medical needs and cutting-edge research. Strategies for Preventing Dementia The afternoon session was delivered by Master of S.H. Ho College, Mok Hing Yiu Professor of Medicine in the Division of Neurology within the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, and Co-Director of the Charles Kao CUHK BEAT AD Service Professor Mok Chung Tong Vincent, sharing the latest developments in dementia research and effective prevention strategies to encourage the audience to protect brain health and cognitive function from an early stage. Professor Mok began with the famous U.S. research Nun Study, pointing out the link between Brain Small Vessel Disease and Dementia, and how it inspired him to focus on dementia prevention research and contribute to neuroimaging standards for research into small vessel disease. He then explained the 14 modifiable risk factors for dementia, illustrating how people can prevent the disease through health management. Professor Mok also discussed the origins of CUHK’s “BEAT-AD” program, recounting how, at the request of Mrs. Gwen Kao (wife of former CUHK Vice-Chancellor the late Professor Charles Kao), he utilised the retired “Jockey Club Charles Kao Brain Health Service” mobile service vehicle parked at Chung Chi to promote brain health services. Thanks to generous support from Dr. Brigitte Lin Ching Hsia, Professor Mok’s team was able to conduct fundus photography screening through the vehicle to eligible elderly individuals, rapidly assessing their dementia risk and offering advice and follow-up, thereby delaying disease onset or even reducing cases. Embodying Holistic Education Promoting Open Exchange The “Excellence Talk Series” is one of the key events celebrating Chung Chi’s 75th anniversary. The College meticulously designed various elements to enhance the experience for speakers and the audience, while showcasing Chung Chi’s adherence to holistic education, balancing innovation encouragement with humanistic care. The stage of Lee Hysan Concert Hall, where the Talk Series took place, was decorated as a cozy living room to visualise the image of “Chung Chi family” and convey the College’s openness to forging friendships and exchanges. The commemorative gifts presented to the speakers were 75th anniversary “In Pursuit of Excellence” Chinese folding fans, with printed calligraphy that written by the late Master Professor Jao Tsung-i, embodying the humanistic inheritance within Chung Chi and CUHK. Additionally, to coincide with the series launch, the College announced a new Podcast channel “Excellence Academy” on the lecture day. Professor Wong Nim Yan from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and Associate Head of Chung Chi College, will host the channel and conduct approximately a 20-minute interview in every episode, featuring Chung Chi members from different generations and disciplines sharing experiences and insights. 7 至善對話 IN DIALOGUE WITH EXCELLENCE 6 永續綠建之願 Aspiration for Green and Sustainable Architecture 王煒曉同學 Mr. Wong Wai Hiu Lucas 綠色建築和社區設計被視為實現都市可持續發 展重要一環，建築學院四年級王煒曉Lucas即 以此為職志。憑着建築熱誠及設計構思，他曾 奪得不少獎項，包括二○二五年「創新科技獎 學金」及崇基學術創作獎，更得以赴美交流一 個學期。本期「至善對話」Lucas會分享他的 經驗和想法。 問：能否分享你參與二○二五年「創新科 技獎學金」的經歷？ 答：這是我第二次申請這項獎學金。第一次申 請是在二年級，指定創科領域同樣是「可持續 發展與綠色科技」，但當時沒有成功。為了再 接再厲，我進一步探索綠色建築的知識，並學 習其他感興趣的環保和建築議題，這讓我在再 次申請時，能更有系統地闡述個人意見，例如 我的建築專業範疇可怎樣創新，以及可如何提 升建築技術的環保程度等。 Green architecture and community design are regarded as crucial components in achieving urban sustainable development, and Wong Wai Hiu Lucas, a fourth-year student in the School of Architecture, has made this his career aspiration. Driven by passion for architecture and innovative design ideas, he won awards including the 2025 Innovation and Technology Scholarship and the Chung Chi Academic Creativity Award, as well as an opportunity to study at an American university for a semester. Lucas will share his experiences and insights into this issue. Q: Could you share your experience participating in the 2025 Innovation and Technology Scholarship? A: This was my second attempt at this scholarship. The first time I applied was during my second year, focusing on the same area of "Sustainable Development and Green Technology” but I was unsuccessful. Gathering Outstanding Speakers Converging Insights and Knowledge The “Excellence Talk Series” will host three more talks in the future. On 11 April, themed “Prosperous Aging”, will be delivered by Dr. Chan Tak Lam Norman, Chairman of Chung Chi College Board of Trustees and Professor Lin Zhixiu, Director of CUHK School of Chinese Medicine. They will unpack secrets to a healthy and affluent later life. On 25 April, the renowned actor and writer Dr. Brigitte Lin Ching Hsia will deliver a talk on the theme “Inspiring Minds”, sharing how she has captured the beautiful scenery along life’s journey, with Professor Serena Jin Sheng Hwa, the Emeritus Professor of Translation, CUHK, hosts the talk. The 11 July lecture, themed “Innovating the Future”, will feature Professor Chiu Wai Yan Philip, Dean of CUHK Faculty of Medicine, and Professor Chia Pun Kok Herbert, Director of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited who earned the reputation “Father of Big Data in Hong Kong”. They will introduce breakthroughs in medical engineering and artificial intelligence to showcase future possibilities for human society. At his first year at university, Lucas and his classmates won an award in a Hong Kong Green Building Council’s competition, with a proposal to redesign Kowloon City Plaza (right). 面試時，評審曾問及：如果你是環境局局長，你會 做些甚麼？幸運地，在這次申請前，我曾聆聽環境 局前局長黃錦星先生講課，還親身向他請教。由於 他出任局長前原是綠色建築師，是我希望投身的行 業，故我對他分享的經驗和意見印象深刻，面試時 得以詳實闡述相關看法。 問：由於獲頒獎學金，你在上學期到美國賓夕 法尼亞州立大學交流，此行有何收穫？ 答：就我的經驗而言，美國大學的學習強度較香港 更高，每星期上三課，而且每課都需要提交建築模 型，這些模型的內容包括空間探索、查找物料對結 構的影響，以及設計的環保和可持續性等。這樣的 訓練其實很有啟發性，還記得其中一次功課是就校 園附近的消防局提交新設計，當時我沿用香港慣常 的設計思維，包括開放式廣場、自然採光和鼓勵通 風，結果被導師指出設計忽略當地冬季的嚴寒氣候， 開放性強的設計不便員工活動。這使我明白建築設 計應當充分考慮自然環境，再小的事也可能是重要 環節。 另外美國社會較為多元，導師文化背景不同，教學 亦各有側重點。記得我一位導師是美國人，他注重 的是實用性和成本效益，重視學生在有限預算內做 出可行又具創意的設計；另一位導師來自伊朗，他 的作法重視用家感受，大至建築外觀的美感，小至 牆壁和梯階的高度—涉及視覺和行走舒適—他 都會提出意見。 問：為何你特別關注本港舊區重建？ 答：高中時我修讀地理，對於城市可持續發展和社 區重建的內容特別感興趣。另一方面，我個性喜歡 「周圍走」，平時也會遊走舊區拍照，經常出沒於 深水埗、九龍城和觀塘等地。我喜歡舊區，它 有其文化價值，人情味濃，而且建築不會一模 一樣。然而舊區也有它的問題，因為它們的建 築很多早於五十甚或七十年前落成，確實未能 配合當前的社區發展和法例要求。那麼，要怎 麼更新舊區，同時又能保存其原有價值，以避 免「推土機」式重建呢？ 我在崇基學術創作獎的獲獎作品Utopian Street Library，是以西營盤為藍本的建築設計。昔日 西營盤充滿街頭味道，人行道面積很大，是街 坊溝通聯誼的重要場所，然而今天人行道已成 行車路，人們亦失去相互溝通的空間。因此我 設計了一個街區圖書館，參照西營盤昔日街區 的空間分布，提供社區設施之餘，亦方便街坊 聯誼。這項設計旨在重建鄰里與街區的連繫。 問：你認為綠色建築有何重要性？未來想 從事這個領域的哪些工作？ 答：香港超過六成的碳排放來自建築物，這是 很高的佔比，而排放源頭主要是建築物用電， 例如冷氣和照明。所以，如果運用綠色建築設 計，例如引入天然日照和通風，便可減少用電， 進而降低電費支出，實際也是推動社會經濟的 可持續發展。其實綠色建築對於香港社會以至 全世界也十分重要，比如在氣候變化之下，我 們能如何應對海平面上升之類的問題。 我未來的職業抱負是綠色建築師和施工經理。 前者是方才提到黃錦星先生過去的工作，主要 是通過設計減少建築對環境造成的污染；後者 則針對項目的執行，比如怎樣減少施工期間的 碳排放，這需要連結不同持份者包括建築師、 工程師和工人來達成，我認為這是有意義的工作。 and architectural issues. This allowed me to present my ideas far more systematically in my second application, explaining how innovation could be introduced within my field and how the environmental performance of architectural technologies might be improved. During the interview, the panel posed a question: if you were the Secretary for Environment, what would you do? As it happened, I attended a lecture by former Secretary for Environment Wong Kam Sing and had conversation with him personally. Since he was a green architect before taking on that government role — exactly the kind of career I aspire to be — his insights into me are lasting. This experience allowed me to offer concrete and well-informed perspectives during the interview. Q: Having been awarded the scholarship, you spent last semester on exchange at Pennsylvania State University. What did you learn? A: In my experience, the academic intensity at American universities was considerably higher than what I was used to in Hong Kong. We had three classes per week, and each session required the submission of an architectural model, covering areas such as spatial exploration, the impact of materials on structure, and the environmental sustainability of designs. This mode of training was genuinely enlightening. I recall one assignment where we were asked to submit a new design for a fire station near campus. Sticking to the design principles I had grown accustomed to in Hong Kong — open plazas, natural lighting, and good ventilation — I was told by my tutor that my design had failed to account for the harsh local winters, making it impractical for staff to move around. This was a valuable lesson: architectural design must thoroughly consider the natural environment, and a minor detail can turn out to be a critical factor. The diversity of the American society also meant that different instructors brought distinctly different perspectives. One of my tutors, an American, emphasised practicality and cost-effectiveness, challenging students to produce feasible and creative designs within a limited budget. Another Iranian tutor placed greater emphasis on the user experience, from the aesthetics of exterior down to the height of walls and steps — in terms of both visual appeal and physical comfort. Q: Why are you particularly concerned about urban renewal in local old districts? A: My interest began in secondary school, where I studied geography and became especially drawn to topics relating to urban sustainability and renewal. I also love to wander through old districts with my camera, frequently visiting areas like Sham Shui Po, Kowloon City, and Kwun Tong. I like these districts — they carry real cultural value, a warm community spirit, and an architectural diversity. Yet they face undeniable challenges, as many of their buildings were constructed fifty or even seventy years ago and no longer meet current community needs or regulatory standards. The question is: how do we renew these areas while preserving what makes them special, avoiding the kind of "bulldozer" redevelopment that erases histories and connections? Utopian Street Library, my award-winning submission for the Chung Chi Academic Creativity Award, was a community architectural design inspired by Sai Ying Pun. In the past, the district featured wide pavements that served as vital social spaces where residents gathered and connected. Today, much of that space has been converted to road use, diminishing the spaces for community interaction. So, I designed a social library modelled on the spatial pattern of Sai Ying Pun's past streetscape, a design intended to provide community facilities while recreating opportunities for residents to reconnect with one another. Q: How do you see the importance of green architecture, and what kinds of work in this field would you like to pursue in the future? A: Over sixty percent of Hong Kong's carbon emissions come from buildings — a remarkably high proportion — with the main sources being electricity consumption for air conditioning and lighting. Green architectural design strategies, such as maximising natural daylight and ventilation, can significantly reduce energy use and, in turn, lower electricity costs, contributing to both environmental and economic sustainability. Indeed, green architecture is an imperative both for Hong Kong and for the world. As climate change accelerates, our respond to rising sea levels will become increasingly urgent. My professional aspirations lie in becoming both a green architect and a construction manager. The former, inspired by Wong Kam Sing's career, focuses on reducing a building's environmental side effect through design. The latter concerns the execution of projects, for example, minimising carbon emissions during the construction process by bringing together architects, engineers, and workers around shared environmental and emissionreduction goals. I find this a meaningful pursuit.

The team formed by Mr. Lau Ka Long (2018/Translation) and Mr. Lee Ming Chun Billy (2014/ Exercise Science and Health Education) from the Ying Wen group emerged as champions. . 2. 三月十四日於何善衡夫人宿舍舉行的「CC75宿舍糖水會」以「一碗糖水，回味歲月」為題，邀得何宿前舍監張越華 教授及新舊宿生分享生活足跡。宿生除了帶領參加者遊覽何宿，更烹煮糖水予眾人享用，體現崇基大家庭的親密無間。 The CC75 “Sweet Reunion: A Taste of Hall Life” was held on 14 March at the Madam S. H. Ho Hall, where the former warden Professor Cheung Yuet Wah as well as current and former residents were invited to share their experiences in the hall.
