This year, the Orientation Day (O Day) for The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was held on 6 August. The College uses a unique theme every year to help new students understand Chung Chi’s characteristics, with ‘ChungChiTopia’ employed this year, not only to introduce the College’s comfortable environment and comprehensive facilities, but more importantly, to show new students Chung Chi’s lively and encouraging atmosphere. The Various Advantages of Campus Life To attract more new students to choose Chung Chi, the College decided on the theme in June and started designing promotional materials. This year, the Freshman Guide is composed of a twenty-page comic-style format, containing various advantages of Chung Chi, including ‘15-minute Life Circle’ of high convenience, ‘Ten out of Ten Hostels’ providing almost one thousand five hundred hostel places, diverse student organisations and activities of choice, a generous scholarship and financial aid amount, flexible arrangements for College General Education and Service-Learning programmes and such. Other than that, the College will also introduce ‘Project E’ in 2027. This project is estimated to be completed next year, providing 300 new hostel places. The College has specially designed three ‘new residents’ for ‘ChungChiTopia’ - a basketball fever Chung Chung, an artsy girl Siu Sin, and a top student Yunzai, together with a fairy Chat Chung Chi who knows everything about Chung Chi, introducing Chung Chi’s multiple advantages and characteristics from a new student’s perspective. It represents that the future campus life at Chung Chi suits students with different backgrounds, personalities, and interests. The College has even designed souvenirs of pushbutton keychains based on the four characters, hoping that students can ‘give it a press’ to relieve stress when needed. The keychains were packaged and distributed in a ‘blind box’ format, increasing the novelty in the promotion process. The Publicists and Briefing Session Same as last year, the O Day was held at the Yasumoto International Academic Park (YIA), and Chung Chi’s welcoming booth was set near the main entrance of the YIA building, with our colleagues and student assistants serving as ambassadors. Apart from introducing the College, they also encouraged new students to participate in the College’s briefing sessions and campus tours for more firsthand experience. The College also arranged for colleagues and student assistants to gather at LT8, located on the second floor of YIA to answer new students’s questions on the spot.

The questions the new students raised were specific and detailed, including the hostel conditions and the point system for applications, the prerequisites and amounts of scholarships and subsidies, overseas learning and exchange opportunities, details of the service-learning programme, and what students are most concerned about – the ‘Final Year Project’ and such. This reflects that the new students were fully prepared to choose their affiliated college, hoping that Chung Chi could best suit their requirements. Four briefing sessions were held in LT8, with 600 new students participating in total. All the briefing sessions were packed as some new students even had to sit on the floor. The briefing sessions was delivered by Professor Randolph Wong, the newly appointed Dean of Students of Chung Chi, and the Professor and Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, CUHK. He first introduced the College’s general information and educational mission, then went on to the many special advantages Chung Chi students enjoyed, including convenient living, diverse facilities, sufficient hostel places, various student activities, flexible arrangements for general education and assembly. From Fellowship to Companion Professor Wong emphasised that Chung Chi places importance on ‘Floating on the scholar “ships”’ and is willing to give resources to top students and students in need. Its total amount of scholarships and financial aid reaches HKD 10 million, covering academics, sports, specialised projects and social service. In addition, to encourage students to explore overseas, the College specially designed a pair of subsidy schemes EYE (Excel Yourself through Exploration) and FLY (Find a Learning Opportunity Yourself), each year subsidising over 500 students, which enabled students to travel to over 50 countries and regions. The Dreaming Through Chung Chi Scheme, Seeds of Good Deed Project Award, and S.H. Sung Creativity Award also subsidised projects based on their nature, helping students achieve their dreams and serve society. In addition to resources, the College also focuses on students’ mental health. Laughter rose among attendees when Professor Wong wittily mentioned the first “Spaceout Competition” hosted at the beginning of the year. He explained that the competition aims to encourage students to clear their minds and relieve themselves from heavy coursework. The competition served as an example of Chung Chi’s efforts in supporting students’ holistic development and its innovation in student affairs. To add new elements, two campus tours were even arranged this year. These tours were led by Chung Chi students, allowing new students to explore the campus together and get to know Chung Chi. In total, more than 200 students participated. The campus tour route covered major facilities, including the Chung Chi College Student Canteen, Fitness Centre, and Living Room. Depending on the group, students visited either Lee Shu Pui Hall or Madam S.H. Ho Hall. The College hopes to give new students firsthand experience of Chung Chi by this tour, enhancing their positive feelings and confidence about the College. The College theme of O Day this year was entitled “ChungChiTopia”. Having designed three “new residents” and a fairy, the College delivers the message that the future campus life of Chung Chi suits students with different backgrounds, personalities, and interests. Through attentive listening and personal experience sharing, the warm and welcoming student ambassadors dedicated themselves to leaving new students with a great impression of Chung Chi.

The Mysterious Gateway of 500 Years: Macao Cultural Exploration Tour Macao embodied the centuries-long histories of cultural exchange between Portugal and China. To explore its historic value, Chung Chi College organised the “Macao Cultural Exploration Tour” from 2 to 4 January. Together with the other 15 participants, Ms. Olivia Cheng, a yearthree student from the Faculty of Law, recognised the deep meaning of Christianity, Catholicism and Buddhism, and how cultural integration between China and the West has shaped today’s Macao. Q: What kind of place is Tung Sin Tong, the first stop of the trip? A: Founded in 1892, Tung Sin Tong is one of Macao’s oldest Chinese charitable institutions. We visited its Historical Archives Exhibition Hall, where the blend of Chinese and Portuguese architectural style symbolised the cultural integration in Macao over the past century. Together Breakthroughs for the 75th Anniversary Marking the 75th anniversary of Chung Chi, the College, as ‘ChungChiTopia’, continued to break new ground over the past months, presenting more lively celebration activities than ever before. For example, set a historical record of singing the school song together at the ‘Carnival cum Kick-off Ceremony’, launched a new podcast ‘Excellence Academy’, and organised four ‘Excellence Talk’ series featuring prominent guests including CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Dennis Lo and veteran actresswriter Dr. Brigitte Lin. The College has also held events modeled after current student activities, like ‘CC75 Star’ contests and ‘CC75 Full Cup’, providing more pathways for teachers, students and alumni to celebrate the 75th anniversary. Indeed, Chung Chi has always placed a high value on innovation and sought breakthroughs amidst tradition. This summer, for example, the overseas study tours first visited in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, while the servicelearning trips first took place in Mexico and Bangladesh. Meanwhile, as committed to improving campus facilities and learning environments, the College has installed a lift in Madam S.H. Ho Hall, renovated the Pentecostal Mission Hall Complex, and advanced the ‘Project E’ — all of which are backed by the generous support from our donors and friends. The College will continue to gain new experiences and strive to achieve Chung Chi’s educational goals. Newly appointed Dean of Students Professor Randolph Wong addressed in the briefing sessions, introducing not only the features of campus life but also the College's efforts towards students' holistic development and mental health. The tour visited The Church of Christ in China Chi To Church (Macao). The image showed a plague presented by its founding members in 1906. The old photos and historic relics on display in the hall recorded Tung Sin Tong’s efforts to provide free medicine and education, which made me think about how its founder could bring the Chinese communities together to respond to the social needs under colonial administration. Its story also made me understand the real meaning of benevolence – a sustained care for other people and communities. Faith without action remains hollow. Q:How did you treat the “conversation” between Chinese and Western religions in Macao? A: The development of religion in Macao is diverse, and Buddhism, Christianity and Catholicism coexist and even influence each other. For example, the Ruins of St. Paul’s, the most iconic landmark in Macao, is carved not only with the Virgin Mary and angels, but also with Chinese characters and peonies. This was a deliberate effort by Christianity to integrate into local culture as it spread throughout the East. At St. Anthony’s Church, we learned about its history of being burnt three times and rebuilt several times, with the most notable incident being that the church was hit by thunder and caught fire during a typhoon in 1874. Amid the storm’s darkness, the blaze served as an unintended lighthouse, guiding lost fishermen safely back to shore. From that year onward, the Procession of Saint Anthony became a regular event among Macao residents, during which the statue of Saint Anthony is carried in procession. Stepping into Kun Iam Tong, also named Templo de Pou Chai, we learned it was also the site where the Treaty of Wanghia was signed. While local devotees offered incense, our Christian group members observed with profound respect, which made me understand the importance of “conversation”. Both the compassion of Buddhism and the redemption of Christianity concern those who suffer, and Macao’s diverse religious landscape reminds us that true unity flourishes through mutual appreciation and respect rather than diminishing differences among mankind. Q: Through this tour, how do you realise the role that religion plays in modern society? A: This journey allowed us to see how religion continues its social function by spreading its faith through education and charitable service. At the University of Saint Joseph, we saw how the Jesuit educational tradition has evolved into the modern university system, emphasising both knowledge and virtue. The University is not only a bridge for academic exchanges between the East and West but also spreads the gospel and truth through its education. We also visited New Life Fellowship, a Christian organisation that provides drug rehabilitation and counselling services. Seeing volunteers provide guidance, help and encouragement to the young people who were lost, I discovered that the gospel is not just doctrines but a power that can reshape lives. At The Church of Christ in China Chi To Church (Macao), we attended a worship service where that a warm atmosphere allowed students of different faiths to engage. We also explored The Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China Morrison Memorial Centre of Macao, discovering how it contributed to the development of local churches and professionals. Society changes rapidly, but this trip made me understand that religion is always caring for the communities. Q: How would you conclude the 3-day trip in Macao? A: The tour is a path of faith from past to present. Starting from the Ruins of St. Paul’s, we realised how to act in faith at Tung Sin Tong, witnessed how faith transforms others at New Life Fellowship, and felt the universal value of faith at Chi To Church. Macao’s religion is not an outdated exhibit in a museum but a dynamic, adaptive, and responsive group of people. The actions of the communities reflect the essence of the interaction between East and West: love – loving your faith, loving others, and loving your society. Meanwhile, besides knowledge, the trip has also made me more modest, beneficent and inclusive. Group photo at the St. Anthony’s Church. Chung Chi College 75th Anniversary “Ink Echoes: A Shared Path with Kan Tai-Keung and Students” 傳統水墨絕不沉悶。 Traditional ink art is far from dull. Under a child’s playful brush, simple dots, lines, and washes bloom into darting fish, vibrant blossoms, and quiet cottages. Even a frayed brush can sweep across the paper to breathe life into majestic, flowing landscapes. Dr. Kan Tai-keung, a master of contemporary ink art and design, has long blended Eastern aesthetics with Western design thinking. In recent years, drawing on the “learning from tradition, nature, and self” philosophy of New Ink Movement pioneer Lui Shou-kwan, Dr. Kan transforms it into an inspiration of beauty, guiding his granddaughter, Xenia Yuen, and other young artists to observe everyday life and paint with boundless imagination. Under the theme “Ink Echoes: A Shared Path”, this joint exhibition showcases Dr. Kan’s latest creations alongside student works, capturing the spirit of mutual learning and growth. The theme also resonates deeply with Chung Chi College’s educational mission and commitment to whole-person development, where holistic education and the value of learning through teacher-student companionship have long been cherished. In celebration of Chung Chi College’s 75th Anniversary, the College is honoured to invite Dr. Kan and his students to exhibit their works, bringing the spirit of intergenerational succession to the fore, and anticipating the exploration of creativity and humanistic values through art. 開幕典禮 Opening Ceremony 日期 / 時間 Date / Time 7/9 (星期一Monday) 5:30pm 地點 Venue 崇基學院行政樓大堂展覽廳 Lobby Gallery, Chung Chi College Administration Building 主禮嘉賓 Officiating Guests 關美寶教授(崇基學院院長) Professor Kwan Mei Po (Head, Chung Chi College) 高永雄教授(崇基學院七十五週年校慶籌備委員會主席) Professor Ko Wing Hung (Chairperson, the 75th Anniversary Celebration Organising Committee, Chung Chi College) 曾陳桂梅女士(崇基學院七十五週年校慶籌備委員會・展覽懷舊委員會主席) Mrs. Tsang Chan Kwai Mui Carol (Chairperson, Heritage and Exhibition Committee, the 75th Anniversary Celebration Organising Committee, Chung Chi College) 靳埭強博士(藝術家)Dr. Closed on Sundays and Public Holidays
