GECC3230 Service-Learning Programme (Local)

2026/27 Term 1

 

Objectives

  • To cultivate a sense of community service in Chung Chi students;
  • To provide students with opportunities to get in touch with different segments of society, broadening their horizons, and strengthening their critical thinking on social issues; and
  • To provide students with opportunities to further develop personal growth and enhance social skills through reflective journals, evaluation meetings, and discussions in seminars.

 

Eligibility

In 2026/27:

  • In 2nd year of attendance or above (Non-Social Work major students with normative study period of 3 years or more)
  • No constraints on study year (for non-Social Work major students with a normative study period of 2 years, applicable to those admitted in 2023/24 and before)

Students will participate in one of the following service groups of 4 team members to conduct at least 80 hours of service.

People with Hearing Disability

  • Service targets are students with different levels of hearing disability.
  • The group aims to enhance students’ social skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, emotional management, and understanding of the community through activity-based learning programmes; and to promote sign language and deaf culture.
  • Service will be conducted in Ngau Tau Kok and Mong Kok.
  • Students are required to serve as volunteers in SLCO, so as to engage the service targets and explore their needs.

Ethnic Minorities

  • The group aims to enhance EM children’s interest in learning Chinese through a variety of activities. Students can also explore the needs of youth, women, and families through the service.
  • Service will be conducted in Jordon.
  • Students are required to serve as volunteers in June, so as to engage the service targets and explore their needs.

Rehabilitated Substance Abusers and their families

  • Service targets are psychotropic substance abusers and their families.
  • Service will be conducted in Tseung Kwan O.
  • Students will participate in the group activities in Centre in June to get in touch with the service targets. After that, the group will conduct service according to the service target needs.

Community Bridging

                    

  • Service targets are residents in Yau Ma Tei district.
  • The group will conduct visits in the community and interview residents. Other than co-organizing activities to the community, students will also design electronic community maps, recording the remarkable highlights and stories, which enrich the community bonding.
  • Students will participate in training sessions related to social design in June.

Senior Citizens

  • The main service location is Choi Hung Estate.
  • The target group is elderly residents of Choi Hung Estate and their caregivers.
  • Through interviews and interactions with social welfare staff and the elderly, students will learn about the needs of the elderly, and design and provide service activities for them in the community.
  • Students may design community activities related to the redevelopment plan of Choi Hung Estate to help the elderly cope with changes and preserve community culture.
  • Through the service, students will enhance their understanding of elderly services and community services, while improving their personal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to organize activities.

YMMSS-Choi Hung Community Centre for Senior Citizens

Community-making
  • Service targets are neighborhoods in Tai Po district.
  • This is a 30-month culture-led placemaking project at Luk Heung Campus, Tai Po. Through arts and culture, community co-creation, living archives, and community incubation, the project aims to transform the site into a vibrant community cooperative space that responds to community needs and strengthens local capacity.
  • Services will be mainly conducted in Luk Heung Campus in Tai Po and Tai Po district.
  • Through the service, students will build real connections with local residents and stakeholders; help initiate and support community events and programmes in Tai Po; engage in cross-sector collaboration with NGOs, community organisations, artists, and academia, gainning hands-on experience in placemaking and community development.

Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service – Hong Kong (ELCSS-HK)

Global Hand

  • The main service location is Tuen Mun.
  • Students will participate in simulation activities, experience the hardships of poverty and the struggles of disadvantaged communities, while also learn about the organization’s core work.
  • Students are required to take part in ten days of volunteer service within the institution, based on the organization’s needs. Please refer to: Volunteering Tasks.
  • Under the instructor’s guidance, students will design exhibitions or public education activities addressing the social issues they identify through their service.
